7-Card Stud is a classic poker game where each player is dealt 7 cards, and the goal is to make the best 5-card poker hand. Unlike Texas Hold’em, there are no community cards and no flop.

Setup:

  • Typically 2–8 players.
  • Played with an ante (small initial bet from all players) and betting rounds.

Dealing the Cards:

  1. Each player is dealt 2 face-down cards (hole cards) and 1 face-up card.
    • The lowest face-up card must post the bring-in (a small forced bet).

Game Progression

The game has five betting rounds

Third Street

After 3 cards are dealt (2 down, 1 up)

  • Lowest up card posts bring-in
  • Betting begins with the player showing the highest poker value face-up card
Fourth Street

Each player gets 1 more face-up card (now 2 up, 2 down)

  • Betting round (starts with best showing hand)
Fifth Street

Another face-up card (3 up, 2 down total)

  • Betting round
Sixth Street

Another face-up card (4 up, 2 down)

  • Betting round
Seventh Street (River)
Final card is dealt face-down
  • Players now have 3 down cards, 4 up cards
  • Final betting round

The Showdown

  • After all betting rounds, players reveal their best 5-card hand.
  • Best hand wins the pot. Standard poker hand rankings apply (royal flush, straight, two pair, etc.).

Key Notes

  • No blinds (uses antes instead)
  • Requires memory and observation (watch what cards are showing and what’s been folded)

It’s a slower, more strategic game than hold’em—perfect for players who enjoy reading opponents and careful decision-making.
