This must be a great game… It was James Bond’s favorite. Elegant and sophisticated but surprisingly simple to play. Two hands of two cards each (these are called Banco and Punto), are dealt to each seated player. Subject to the card values, an additional third card may be dealt. Like betting on the colors Red or Black in the game of Roulette, players bet which hand will win or tie. Once dealing is complete, the hand with the highest value wins!
Baccarat Basics
Objective of the Game
You bet on one of three possible outcomes:
- Player hand wins
- Banker hand wins
- Tie
Each hand receives two cards. Card values: Ace = 1, 2–9 = face value, 10 & face cards = 0. The hand closest to nine wins. If the total exceeds nine, only the last digit counts (e.g. a total of 15 becomes 5)
Betting Options & Payouts
- Player bet: Pays 1:1
- Banker bet: Pays 1:1 minus a 5% commission (lower house edge)
- Tie bet: Pays about 8:1 (some casinos offer 9:1), but has a significantly higher house edge
Third Card Rules (Punto Banco version)
- If either hand totals 8 or 9 on the first two cards (called a natural), no third card is drawn
- If no natural:
- Player draws a third card if total is 0–5; stands on 6–7
- Banker’s action depends on its total and the player’s third card using a specific table
Gameplay Example
- Place your bet on Player, Banker, or Tie.
- Two cards are dealt to both hands.
- Totals are assessed:
- If either has 8 or 9 → compare and resolve immediately.
- Otherwise, drawing rules determine if a third card is drawn.
- Winning bet is paid; losing bets are collected.
Tips & Strategy
Best Bets
- Banker bet has the lowest house edge (~1.06%), though it includes a 5% commission.
- Player bet is slightly worse (~1.24% house edge).
- Tie bet is high risk, often with a ~14–15% house edge
Money Management & Betting Systems
Popular approaches include:
- Limiting risk to 1–5% of bankroll per unit bet,
- Setting stop-loss or profit limit for each shoe or session,
- Using positive progression strategies (e.g. increasing bets on wins, not losses),
- Walking away when patterns break or you’re tired/emotional
